Have you ever wondered about the school house located behind the Real Estate office in the Towne Center? Where did it come from? When was it built? How many children were in attendance? Here’s an excellent way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend fun and find out the story of Bear Valley Springs past at the School House Museum Open House Saturday May 26th from 11:30-2:30. It promises to be a good time with miniature donkeys and hot dogs, soda, and chips for only $1.00 each. Native Plant Sale – Place your orders before March 30th

Desert Mountain Resource Conservation and Development Council and the Tehachapi Resource Conservation District (TRCD) are holding a Spring Native Plant Sale to introduce the conservation and safety benefits of landscaping with fire-resistant, water efficient, California native plants to the community. Native plant sale order forms and lists with photos and description are available at the Bear Valley, Stallion Springs, and Golden Hills Community Service Districts, the Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce, and on-line at www.desertmountainrcandd.org. Orders must be prepaid and received by the close of business Friday, March 30th. Plants will be available for pickup one day only at the TRCD office at 321 West C Street, Tehachapi, on Saturday, April 14, form 9 am to 3 pm.

Saturday, February 11, 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM, Your $25 ticket ($30 on the day of the event) you will be given a complimentary commemorative glass and 10 tasting tickets with a map of what businesses are serving and what wines they have. You can pick from a variety of fine red or white wines and chocolates. There will be music and delicious appetizers. The BVS Cultural Arts Association is sponsoring the annual Holiday POPS Concert, Sunday, December 4th from 2 – 4 pm. The event will be held at The Whiting Center and features the Tehachapi POPS Orchestra. Families are welcome. Light refreshments will be offered at Intermission. Suggested donation: Adults $5, children free. No reservations are needed.

Saddle up your horses and ride to either of Tehachapi’s Local Vineyards. Both Triassic Legacy Winery and Souza Winery are horse and rider friendly….. Secure Pipe Hitching Rails, Watering Troughs and views of your horses are available! Both wineries serve snacks and at Triassic, BBQs are available for you to grill your own foods.

If you have friends visiting with horses, the BVS Equestrian Center has stalls they rent out on a nightly basis.

Urban Forests Have Major Impact on Americans

A new report by the USDA Forest Service, “Sustaining America’s Urban Trees and Forests,” provides an overview of the current status and benefits of America’s urban forests that affect the lives of nearly 80 percent of the U.S. population.

“For many Americans, local parks, yards and street trees are the only forests they know,” said Tom Tidwell, chief of the U.S. Forest Service. “More than 220 million Americans live in cities and urban areas and are dependent on the environmental, economic and social benefits provided by these trees and forests. This report shows the challenges faced by privately and publicly owned forests and offers some cost-effective tools to boost the effectiveness of future land management.”

The distribution of urban forests varies from community to community, but most share the same benefits provided by city trees: improved water quality, reduced energy use, diverse wildlife habitats and increased quality of life and well-being for residents.

As densely populated areas expand across the country, the importance of these forests and their benefits will increase, as will the challenges to conserve and maintain them. City managers and neighborhood organizations can benefit from a number of management tools listed within the report, such as TreeLink, a networking Web site providing technological information on urban forest resources to be of assistance for challenges facing their local trees and forests.

The report also notes that urban trees face challenges over the next 50 years. For examples invasive plants and insects, wildfire, air pollution and climate change will all have impacts on the tree canopy of cities across America.

“Urban forests are an integral part of community ecosystems, with numerous elements that significantly affect the quality of city life,” said lead author David Nowak, a U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station researcher. “These trees not only provide essential services but also increase property values and commercial benefits.”

Bear Valley Springs Turkey Shoot

No, not live turkeys!! This event will be held November 12th at 10 am at the Bear Valley Shooting Range. Sign-up at the Whiting Center before Nov. 12, the cost is $7. Each shooter will fire 5 rounds at a distance of 50 yards in the standing position from the firing line (sorry, no shot-guns). The turkey shoot is open to all Bear Valley residents. Each shooter must have an amenity card. If it is raining or snowing that day, the event will be cancelled.
